Dreamscape Blanket

A role-play performance exploring species composition in a fallow field ecosystem in southern Ontario. The work unfolds as a process of becoming, inviting performers to embody the soil as it is protected and shaped by the complex root systems of a perennial meadow. Each species is hand-crafted from reclaimed household fabrics, emphasizing cycles of reuse, interdependence, and care within disturbed landscapes.

Body Coiling

Body Coiling is a textile sewing performance which references the coiled rug my family had in our home when I was a child. A continual work in progress, Body Coiling is formed gradually, using slow craft practise and household textile reuse. Triggering tactile skin memory, the fabrics are used as material signifiers of cultural place and personal history. These textiles are re-crafted through deconstruction, braiding and hand sewing to form a one directional, endless, spiralling configuration. When activated by the body, the domestic object moves and writhes- it is biomimetic, even wild.

Body Rug Performance: The Grey Aphid

Rug making and performance come together to bring life and the unexpected to the interior home space. By re-crafting and animating traditional coiled rug making, Carew hopes to design a porous interplay between inside and outside worlds. The shape and movement is inspired by Grey Aphids.

(Au)gust Headlands

Fields of towering, swaying Goldenrod blanket the Leslie Spit headlands in Toronto. They are at their tallest and brightest golden yellow in the waining days of August when the sun thinks about setting. The symbol for gold on the periodic table of elements is (Au) or Aurum.
